If you're not familiar with the term "product diversion", you're not alone. Diversion is when professional salon products, such as Brazilian Blowout, Alterna, Matrix, etc, show up in unauthorized outlets or retail centers. Even if you have never heard of it, most of you have probably witnessed it on a regular basis. It exists in places like grocery stores, drugstores, supermarkets,

basically anywhere you can buy products. Anything from A-Z can be diverted but more frequently exclusive items from manufacturers tend to be the most coveted by big retail stores and more so now online due to popular demand. Professional salon products are not excluded from the list either. Product diversion has been an issue for many years but, currently there are not any laws to prevent it from happening and that alone makes it very difficult for small local businesses to close the gap. We want to clarify that as a general rule you would not know if the product you purchased away from the salon was diverted or not. That is why we supply information to you so that you can use it as a reference as well as to keep our clients informed so they can make the same educated choices.

The biggest frustration to many hair stylists is the fact that many sell professional products as a part of their livelihood. That livelihood is disrupted when those particular exclusive items end up in retail stores and online when in fact they shouldn't be. Often times these products are expired, counterfeit or not guaranteed by the manufacturer. When you buy

professional salon products outside of certified hair salons you are taking a risk not knowing whether they are expired and certainly not guaranteed. More importantly professional hair stylist have dedicated their careers in order to consult your hair and your specific hair needs. If you have a regular stylist, who better to trust when it comes to knowing the ins and outs of your hair?

Now I know what you're thinking, why would big chain retail stores risk selling "grey market" products in their stores. This is where things get complicated. Grey Market distributors "acquire" product through many means, then set them aside in a warehouse for years until the barcode expires so they can't be tracked. During this time, not only does the barcode expire but so does the product inside, from heat or just time, into something that is an ineffective shadow of its former self. There is also the possibility that some manufacturers are looking the other way when it comes to providing big retail with professional salon products. We understand the concept of "business is business" but many stylist don't understand why some manufacturers

—whose products end up in retail stores by the truckloads—feel the need lie to salons and stylists alike saying that they support them 100%. Some stylist can't help but feel betrayed when they see the very same products at a supermarket down the street.

These days many salons and stylists have veered away from companies that distribute to supermarkets. A lot have combated product diversion by only carrying professional salon products made by smaller upcoming companies. Many won't even bother with brands they know for a fact are being sold other places aside from professional salons. Some cosmetologist have even taken it upon themselves to develop their own products to meet their clients needs. There are some things clients that frequent their local salon can do to help as well. The most obvious would be to stop supporting the products lines you see at your local supermarket that are meant to be professional salon products, you can tell by reading that label on the bottle. It will say something along the lines of "Product not guaranteed when sold outside of a Professional Salon". We also encourage our clients to notify us when they come across products we currently carry in places that are not professional salons. Manufacturers do not always know when the product has been diverted, and we address the issues with them directly.

Even if we can't stop diversion from happening first hand, we can control what we recommend to our clients within our walls.
